In his book, writer, screenwriter, and dramaturg David Jan Novotný draws from the stories contained in the Book of Genesis. He calls his retellings of these stories "neomidrash," a new midrash. This refers to an important part of Jewish tradition, the midrashim, interpretations of Old Testament texts. With his deep knowledge of Jewish history, tradition, and Hebrew, Novotný is able not only to reinterpret biblical stories and seek their meaning but also to look beyond them, retelling them and using them to humorously reflect on the contemporary world. The book literally starts from Adam and guides the reader through Cain's fate, illuminating the stories of the patriarchs in a new light and weaving the chapters about Joseph into something akin to a short novel.
