Beschreibung
The Shaking of the Foundations (1948) is the first of three collections of sermons by Paul Tillich. Profound meditations and reflections on well-known or lesser-known biblical texts continue to surprise with their deep understanding, existential charge, and practical grasp of the Christian message even after many years. As the author states in the preface, the sermons contained here will help demonstrate that a strictly systematic nature need not prevent theology from being applicable to personal or social problems of religious life. However, a more serious reason led Paul Tillich to publish this book. A large portion of the listeners of his sermons at Sunday services came from non-Christian circles. For them, sermons in the traditional biblical sense would not make sense. Therefore, the author was compelled to resort to a different, more civil manner of expression. The secular society that Tillich addresses is, in fact, our society. The first Czech edition of The Shaking of the Foundations concludes with a detailed afterword by theologian Jan Štefan. It introduces readers to Tillich's life, presents his work, and summarizes the response to his thoughts in the Czech and Slovak context. The cover features an image by Daniel Balabán.
