Beschreibung
This volume is a critical edition of all surviving scholarly correspondence between Czech philologist and literary historian Antonín Škarka (1906–1972) and philosopher and comparatist of Ukrainian-Russian origin Dmytro Čyževsky (1894–1977) from 1939 to 1972, comprising more than 80 items. Alongside the standard editorial apparatus, the book contains an introductory study highlighting the uniqueness of the correspondence. Although both scholars of Czech studies lived for most of their lives in different parts of a politically divided Europe and could not meet in person, their letters enabled them to establish and develop an intensive and productive collaboration, which eventually led, in the second half of the 1960s, to the creation of a unique scholarly publishing team working across the Iron Curtain. The correspondence provides unique insights into the principles of scholarly communication across the Iron Curtain, as well as the period’s problems and limitations in the practice of the humanities on both sides.
