This Slovak-language book is set in the village of Little Nettlebed, which is steeped in secrets. Ravens perch on the roofs of houses belonging to people who are soon to die, while piercing dog barks can be heard at night. When a villager claims to have seen five sisters transform into dogs before his eyes, panic and unusual fear spread through the community. Although belief in witchcraft is fading, hostility towards anyone different remains strong, and the villagers’ conflicting views lead to the same conclusion: something is wrong in Little Nettlebed, and the sisters will pay for it. The book celebrates breaking away from convention and asks whether, in this world, it is safer to be a dog than an unusual young girl.
