Guido Contin, known as Koňak, lives with his cat Žena in an abandoned railway watchman’s cottage deep in the forests of Cadore. He owns nothing but a box filled with letters addressed to the mountain peaks. They were written by a man named Onesto, who tells of his life with his twin brother Santo, his meeting with Celeste, war, death and love. At first glance, these are simple stories of people who accept their fate without question and cling to hope like spruce trees on the steepest slopes. In reality, they reveal dramatic events and a longing for inner peace: a kidnapping, violence, a bomb falling at night, a photograph hidden among the rocks, a shameful secret and, above all, unspoken love flowing through life like a wild stream. Through its simplicity, Onesto reveals a universal truth: climbing does not require strength. What matters is not holding on, but letting go of everything—fear, uncertainty, doubts, problems, solutions, the past, the future, ties and support—and moving continuously towards the sky.
