Tenleigh Falynová is labelled poor, backward and provincial as she struggles to survive in a small, impoverished mining town with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her only hope is the Tyton Coal scholarship, which would allow her to attend any university, build a career and perhaps one day move her family away. Kyland Barrett is competing for the same scholarship. He too longs to escape the town that has brought him hunger, loneliness and pain, and he refuses to let anything stand in his way, least of all the girl who is his greatest rival. Yet the strangers become friends, and friendship gradually turns into love. Although both are determined not to form a lasting bond, the more time they spend together, the more impossible that becomes. Only one of them can win the scholarship and leave. What will happen to the other when that day comes? The novel is in Slovak.
