Why does nothing add up about the victim's past? Detective Sergeant Washington Poe is fighting in court against forced eviction from his beloved cottage in the woods when he is suddenly called to a case of a man who was beaten to death with a baseball bat in a rundown brothel. Poe is confused – he hunts serial killers, and this looks like a run-of-the-mill murder at the hands of a pimp. However, his presence is personally requested by people who prefer to remain in the shadows. As Poe and socially awkward programmer Tilly Bradshaw begin to dig into the case, seemingly unanswerable questions arise: Why does nothing add up about the victim's past, who underwent top-level security clearances for strategically important work? Why was a small decoration left at the crime scene, and why was it stolen by one of the investigators? What is the connection between the murder being investigated and a flawlessly executed bank robbery from three years ago, during which nothing was stolen?
