In the spring of 1942, unrest is growing in Warsaw, and young Elżbieta Rabineková observes it from the window of her cozy apartment. She has no sympathy for the Germans patrolling the streets, but she tries not to think about what is happening behind the wall of the neighboring Jewish quarter. She knows about German brutality all too well, as she must hide her true identity. But when she befriends nurse Sara, she learns something that draws her into a dangerous world of lies and heroic deeds. Sara helps smuggle children out of the Warsaw ghetto, and faced with the harsh reality of war, Elżbieta can no longer look away and joins the resistance. Here she meets Jewish youth Roman Gorka, whose bitter injustice drives him to rebellion. He throws himself into it with a fervor that even his love for Elżbieta cannot suppress. However, his rebellion inadvertently draws attention to Sara's activities and unknowingly endangers Elżbieta and her family. The chance to gain freedom is dwindling...
