This Czech-language book examines the development of the Czech and Slovak constitutional systems from the dissolution of Czechoslovakia to the present. It compares not only the differences between the constitutions of the two independent states, but also how the Czech and Slovak political systems responded to constitutional conflicts that later arose in their political life. The book shows that Slovakia primarily responded through repeated amendments to the constitutional text, while in the Czech Republic constitutional actors more often had to find solutions through the formation of constitutional conventions, ordinary legislation, case law or political negotiation. It also addresses questions such as how the Czech and Slovak presidents responded to the introduction of direct election by citizens, given that only in Slovakia was constitutional reform accompanied by a formal strengthening of presidential powers; why the Czech Constitutional Court was able to shape the electoral system more intensively than its Slovak counterpart; why coordinating centres for European policy were established within different constitutional institutions in the two countries; and how the powers of the Czech and Slovak caretaker governments differ.
