After two rather unsuccessful Olympic Games in Paris (1900) and St. Louis (1904), the Italians withdrew from hosting the IV Olympic Games due to the earthquake in Naples in 1906, leaving the Olympic movement at a fateful crossroads. Ultimately, it was the English who saved it from disaster and possible extinction. London in 1908 managed to host a magnificent 'Olympiad,' which served as a great inspiration for future games. The Czech delegation marched under its own flag, independent of Austria, and the fencers led by Vilém Goppold of Lobsdorf earned the admiration and recognition of the London audience.
