The novel describes the life of a boy from a children's home who was actually quite lucky – he ended up in a foster family where he learned about love. True, at first, Ferda loves animals more, and reality is still a nightmare for him. He hides in his own world of stories, where he can be someone else, even a girl. He enjoys dressing up in dresses at home, although he's not sure about the surgery. At school, he experiences bullying because of his differences. But then a few years older Jakub appears. Their friendship gradually transforms into a fragile yet deep romantic relationship that withstands many challenges, including Ferda's experiments with the opposite sex. 'Závojnatky' can be read as an intimate confession and a love story, a tale presented with perspective and humor about shedding veils through which people work towards their own identity.
