Beschreibung
Children represent an important part of human society, although their voices have rarely echoed from the distant past. In this monograph, the author uncovers and reconstructs the world of Roman citizen children during the Roman Empire. She addresses the structure and social framework of a child's life within the family and society of the Roman Empire and their transformations over time, particularly the issues of violence and death in children's lives. She analyzes children's encounters with violence and death, examines the role of the child as a victim in extreme situations (when confronted with violence or death), as well as an active agent who can transcend social norms and commit acts of violence or other forms of criminal activity, or must cope with death – their own or that of their loved ones.
