What role do materials and materiality play in architecture across the centuries, and what place do they occupy in the theoretical thinking of art historians, historians and architects? This monograph seeks answers to these and related questions. It is based on the online conference and subsequent workshop held on 3 and 4 June 2021, and presents various approaches to researching the subject, together with their practical application by several contemporary Czech architects. It also deepens understanding of the topic through theoretical reflection on key concepts such as tectonic and stereotomic principles, material truth and material transformation in the art-historical tradition of the Brno School of Art History, from Václav Richt[r] and Zdeněk Kudělka to the present day, represented in the theoretical writings of Professor Jiří Kroupa.
