This Czech-language novel follows Petr, a talented young man who glides through medical school and soon becomes a successful doctor at a prestigious Prague clinic. His success comes at the cost of a constant struggle with alcohol, to which he increasingly succumbs. He gradually loses his job, family and friends, and when he reaches almost rock bottom, he has no choice but to make a radical change. After a long search, he becomes a general practitioner in Pernink, a small town in the Ore Mountains. There, surrounded by nature and a community in which people must rely on one another, Petr receives a second chance at life.
