This Czech-language historical novel returns to Harpers department store on Oxford Street in London in 1915. The girls of Harpers face the harsh reality of the First World War and each does everything she can to get through the difficult times. Sally Harper fights with all her strength to keep the department store afloat, while Beth Burrows worries about her husband Jack, who is now at sea, and is increasingly tormented by doubts about whether they will ever meet again. Maggie Gibbs works as a nurse on the battlefields of France, where the demanding work leaves her exhausted, but when her fiancé’s plane crashes into the sea, she feels that her world has ended. Marion Kaye tries to care for her younger siblings while her two older brothers and her fiancé fight for the future of their family and the whole world. All the girls of Harpers and their families must find enough strength to overcome the most challenging period of their lives.
