The fourth part of the novel fresco begins with Charles's return as the crowned Roman Emperor from Italy to his home. He is the master of a substantial part of the Christian world and intervenes in the affairs of the church and other rulers. He is able to resolve long-standing disputes, but his policies also provoke new ones. This, of course, means political concessions to allies and also a lot of money. His vast empire can still bear these costs. The idea of a unified world spurs him on to a second Roman expedition in an attempt to free the papacy from Avignon captivity. Events in the empire and his marriage policies bring him further territorial gains, but Charles increasingly focuses on his immature son Wenceslas and tries to help him gain the Roman royal crown. However, the aging and sometimes somewhat nostalgic Charles no longer has the strength to maintain the Christian world in the form he envisions. The first signs of crisis are emerging, which Charles will not live to see...
