In a field near the newly built castle of Landštejn, a dead body is discovered during plowing. Subsequently, one of the finders unexpectedly commits suicide, and the other disappears without a trace. The new castle scribe, who is representing the castellan during his illness, conducts the investigation of both extraordinary events in a manner that raises legitimate doubts. These doubts are particularly prevalent among the men of the castle district, who are to form the core of the newly formed castle garrison. When their natural leader Sigibert of Sichelbach is severely injured under strange circumstances during a scuffle in the woods, their trust in the scribe is shattered...
