It's March 1870. London is shrouded in cold and thick fog. Inspector Ben Ross of Scotland Yard has other worries than the whims of the weather, as the body of a young woman has been found in a dumpster behind a restaurant on Piccadilly. Who is the victim and how did she end up in such a place? The investigation first leads Inspector Ross to a shoemaker in Salisbury and then to a landowner in Yorkshire. Meanwhile, Ben's wife Lizzie, with the help of maid Bessie, is investigating the mysterious case of a girl who is apparently imprisoned in her own home. While Ben gradually uncovers the traces of the crime, Lizzie discovers a key piece of evidence that could lead him to solve the case...
