Summer 1923 ***** Commissioner Leo Wechsler is spending his vacation on the island of Hiddensee with his girlfriend Clara Bleibtreu. Clara meets the doctor and women's rights activist Henriette Strauss, a dynamic and charismatic personality. The doctor is well-traveled, involved in social issues, and does not let conventions bind her in her love life, which fascinates Clara. However, in the autumn, Henriette suddenly and unexpectedly dies in her apartment in Charlottenburg. The cause of death cannot be determined with certainty.
