The prosecutor of King Přemysl II. Otakar, Oldřich of Chlum, and at the same time the administrator of Bezděz Castle, has the authority to investigate and punish capital crimes in the region. This time he is dealing with the theft of a thorn from Christ's crown; a rare relic that Havel of Lemberk acquired and intends to donate to St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. The crime was committed just two days before the king's arrival, who is to participate in the ceremonial consecration of the relic, so the whole affair threatens to be quite a scandal. In a short time, more crimes pile up - the murders of the nobleman Jan of Střelce, the chaplain of Lemberk, and the goldsmith Ruprecht of Jablonné. Are these crimes related, or not? And what about the alleged rape of the goldsmith's wife? Are the Danish envoy and a French nobleman involved in the crimes? Who and why is killing Zdislava of Lemberk's beloved cats? Although Oldřich of Chlum is pressed for time to quickly solve all the crimes, he traditionally handles his task exceptionally well.
