Not all Czech monarchs were fortunate enough to die in their own beds surrounded by their loved ones. Even Prince Václav, later canonized as the patron saint of the Czech lands, was brutally beaten to death by the retinue of his younger brother Boleslav. Prince Jaromír was stabbed by an unknown assailant in the bathroom at night. Similarly, the murderer of the last Přemyslid, the young King Václav III, remained unidentified. Two Czech kings heroically fell in battle – Přemysl Otakar II and John of Luxembourg, while another monarch, Louis Jagellon, died fleeing from battle. Some Czech queens also met unfortunate fates. The widow of the first Christian prince Bořivoj, the later canonized princess Ludmila, was strangled by hired assassins, and Queen Johana of Bavaria, the first wife of Václav IV, was suffocated by her husband's favorite hunting dog.
