Beschreibung
This Czech-language historical novel is set at the end of the 16th century, when the family of a minor Czech nobleman is divided into two hostile camps by inheritance and religious disputes. The adult siblings have not spoken to one another for many years. Their father and one of the younger sons leave to fight in France, while another son pursues a military career first in Poland and later in the Netherlands. The costs of war severely deplete the family treasury, eventually leading to debt and the sale of much of the estate. The estranged family members are forced to live once again at the ancestral seat they left many years earlier, now ruled firmly by the eldest son, heir to the title. The conflict intensifies when news arrives of the deaths of their father and one of their brothers. A widow, a foreigner previously unknown to the family, then appears at the ancestral estate.
