This Czech-language novel follows Robert Maxwell, who is a refugee, soldier, spy and billionaire, and one of the most powerful and mysterious men of the 20th century. He changes his name, past and identity, rising from a poor Jewish boy in the Carpathian Mountains through military and intelligence services to the top of a media empire built on debt, secrets and dangerous connections with the KGB, StB and Mossad. Petr Prucha frames this chilling story around a single night, 4 November 1991, when Maxwell stands aboard his yacht Lady Ghislaine and perhaps, for the first time in his life, does not know what will happen next. This gripping novel about power and its limits, the identity one can create but never entirely leave behind, and secrets that eventually turn against their bearer asks a question that still has no clear answer: how did Robert Maxwell die, and by whose hand? The story is based on real events but remains a work of fiction.
