This Czech-language historical nonfiction book follows the wartime campaign of Alexander the Great from 334 to 323 BC. Karel Richter goes beyond a strictly historical account of the extraordinary, sometimes almost superhuman achievements of the young Macedonian king, who defeated Greek, Persian, and Indian opponents in battles whose victorious outcome often seemed impossible. With a vivid understanding of the historical facts, he portrays Alexander as an exceptionally capable man, remarkable for his strength, wisdom, and grand plans to conquer the world. At the same time, he shows him in moments of human weakness, unwise decisions, doubt, mistakes, and reprehensible actions. Alexander remains a great ancient commander and ruler, yet also a fully human figure, even as his growing successes lead him to believe that he is a god. Only his premature death ends this delusion, while his deeds and the empire he creates make him immortal.
