Upon the arrival of the Czechoslovak foreign army in Great Britain in the summer of 1940, the exiled political representation placed great emphasis on the intense promotion of the resistance, the foreign army, and pre-war Czechoslovakia by all available means to ensure the favor of broad layers of the British population. A significant success was achieved by the traveling exhibition about Czechoslovakia, which was visited by over a million Britons in fourteen cities over eighteen months. This publication, which aims to familiarize the public with the artistic creations of soldiers during World War II, is divided into two parts. The first part thoroughly presents the activities of the visual artists represented in the foreign army in the West, the organization of their work, and its utilization by the Military Propaganda Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in London in organizing promotional exhibitions. The second part introduces individual creators and their colorful life stories through biographical profiles. Their task was to artistically capture and visually express phenomena in the Czechoslovak foreign army or its surroundings that directly concern it, impressions from wartime activities and military life.
