The fascist regime of Benito Mussolini was one of the consequences of World War I. The Duce exploited the political, social, and spiritual turmoil in Italy after the war — although victorious — and in Europe as a whole. He promised to create a new 'Roman Empire' and began to realize his conquests in the 1930s. However, the battlefields did not bring Italy the expected gains; instead, Italians experienced significant losses and, over time, persistent failures. The war drained the country, and increasingly difficult living conditions led to protests, strikes, unrest, and the first collapse of the fascist regime in July 1943 plunged Mussolini into almost absolute dependence on Germany. Although the dramatic rescue by Skorzeny's paratroopers led to a revival of fascism in northern Italy, it was more of a parody of earlier times, which was definitively ended only by Mussolini's mutilated body hanging at a gas station in Milan in April 1945...
