The Great Uprising of Bohdan Khmelnytsky represents an incredibly bloody and devastating conflict of the second half of the 17th century. Its course and consequences influenced the internal political development of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and changed the balance of power across Eastern Europe, as the Moscow state began to benefit significantly from the gradual decline of the Commonwealth and the division of Ukrainian territory, expanding its influence further west and increasingly intervening in European affairs. This is also what makes these dramatic events relevant for today's reader, who is experiencing the current war events in Ukraine. ****** Through historical stories from battlefields and political negotiations, the author clarifies not only Khmelnytsky's uprising but also analyzes the previous development of the Cossack movement. At the same time, he dismantles entrenched stereotypes of historical thinking, somewhat distorted by the famous novel 'With Fire and Sword' by Henryk Sienkiewicz and the cinematic work of Jerzy Hoffman. ****** The book contains a large number of accompanying illustrations and unique maps depicting battles and military campaigns.
