Few issues in the history of the American continent attract as much attention from the Czech public as the question of relations between Native Americans and the white population of America, which, among other things, forms part of the history of the so-called Wild West. The Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s were the culmination of a process that began with the discovery of America or at least the establishment of the first English colonies, marking the replacement of hunting, gathering, and primitive agriculture with intensive farming or other economic activities. The Great Sioux War, which included the Battle of Little Bighorn, where the American army suffered its greatest defeat in battles with Native Americans, can serve in many ways as an illustrative example of the methods of warfare and the outcomes of confrontations. It resulted in relatively small loss of life, yet brought far-reaching changes for the defeated. Native hunters disappeared from the plains of the adjacent mountains, replaced by miners, farmers, and cattle ranchers. Sitting Bull, the victor over Custer, went to Canada and returned to performing in a collection of curiosities. His death in 1890 then symbolizes the definitive end of one era in the history of the American continent.
