The bilateral relations between Czechoslovakia and Israel from 1948 to 1967 can be described as very dynamic, eventful, and particularly reflective of the events of the Cold War. While the second half of the 1940s was characterized by an extraordinary level of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, during the following years the situation changed dramatically and the mutual relations significantly cooled. Political processes in Czechoslovakia during the 1950s, marked by pronounced anti-Semitism, played a crucial role in this period. Subsequently, in the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict, Czechoslovakia, like most Eastern Bloc countries, clearly sided with the Arab states. Tensions in Czechoslovak-Israeli relations escalated in June 1967, when Czechoslovakia completely severed official relations with Israel in response to the events of the Six-Day War. This state of affairs persisted until the change of political regime in Czechoslovakia in 1989.
