This Czech-language novel is highly unusual for Jules Verne’s work. A reader unaware of its authorship might think it was written by the English novelist Charles Dickens. The story takes place in Ireland during the second half of the 19th century, when terrible poverty and famine are driving people to emigrate and leaving the country increasingly depopulated. The narrative begins in the summer of 1875, when a beggar named Thornpipe wanders through the Irish countryside. His dog pulls a cart carrying a barrel organ decorated with what Thornpipe calls “royal puppets.” He pretends that the puppets move by themselves, but in reality a three-year-old boy is shut inside the instrument and operates them. The orphan and foundling, known as Little Good-Natured, is beaten by Thornpipe and nearly starved to death. The novel follows the boy’s fate, first describing his miserable childhood in a workhouse and later showing how his business skills enable him to acquire a respectable fortune, which he uses to help other people in need.
