Hynek Heřman - Doktore, rodíme! – Lišková Karolína (2026)

This Czech-language interview book follows obstetrician Hynek Heřman, who has headed one of the country’s most attractive maternity hospitals in Prague’s Podolí district for eleven years. He has witnessed thousands of births, as well as personal dramas, and discusses the emotional demands of his profession, his path from the hospital in Benešov to a leading Prague workplace, and how obstetrics has changed medically and humanly over three decades. He explains what modern diagnostics can do, where their limits lie, how telemedicine works and how an app can be used to communicate with an obstetrician. In conversation with journalist Karolína Lišková, he also describes warning signs during pregnancy, what to avoid, common myths about pregnancy and childbirth, traditional advice, changes to the immune system and modern diagnosis and treatment of birth injuries. He talks about preparing for the birth of quintuplets, the qualities an obstetrician should have and what happens when a birth does not go according to plan, while explaining terms such as “kapíčko,” “section” and “kaiser,” and whether an epidural can prolong labour. The book also addresses sensitive questions, including what determines the survival of an extremely premature baby, how doctors give parents bad news and whether the fragility of life occurs to him after a difficult day. It also includes five candid accounts from women about their journeys to motherhood.
