Pippa Edwards has never fit in with the crowd. She is autistic and likes symmetry, synonyms, peace and quiet, and aeroplanes. She hates surprises, noise and anything that might unsettle her, including questions about whom she is dating and when she will get married. Her relationships have always ended before they had a chance to properly begin. Pippa works as an air traffic controller at the busy airport in Johannesburg, where she regularly communicates with pilots. One of them is Andrew, whose voice she finds particularly pleasing. When a ten-year school reunion approaches, which she has no desire to attend, they meet in the airport café and discover that they share the same problem: the people around them take too much interest in their personal lives and offer unsolicited advice. They agree to pretend to be in a relationship, setting off on a long flight during which they get to know each other. At various shared events, including a wedding, Christmas and family birthdays, Andrew discovers that Pippa is a true original who makes no pretence and is simply herself. Pippa finally finds a relationship that was meant to be only an act, but people make plans and life changes them.
