Beschreibung
In 1865, sisters Charlotte and Henrietta Stevenson have achieved everything women of their time are permitted to achieve. Frustrated by social restrictions and inspired by Jane Austen’s work, they begin secretly corresponding with her last surviving brother, the elderly Admiral Francis Austen. He gives them one of his sister’s original letters and invites them to visit him in England. The Boston ladies are not Sir Francis’s only correspondents. In Philadelphia, unmarried brothers Nicholas and Haslett Nelson, veterans of the recent Civil War and dealers in rare books, are drawn to England by the admiral’s promise to have them assess a previously unknown rare artefact belonging to Jane Austen. The Stevenson sisters secretly set out on the journey without a chaperone, but their ship also carries the Nelson brothers, the writer Louisa May Alcott, Sara-Beth Gleason, a wealthy senator’s daughter who has her eye on the Nelson brothers, and Judge Thomas Nash, who boards at the very last moment to watch over the sisters. The voyage changes the lives of everyone involved in dramatic and unpredictable ways, aided by the transformative power of a love for literature and for Jane Austen herself. The contents are in Czech.
