Set in the United States at the end of the 19th century, this novel follows six randomly selected citizens who compete for a sixty-million-dollar inheritance after the death of Chicago millionaire William J. Hypperbone, a member of the local Eccentrics’ Club. They play a game of goose not in a room but across the entire United States, whose map has been redrawn as a game board. As in the real game, their progress is determined by dice, under the supervision of a notary. According to a codicil to Hypperbone’s will, the mysterious player known only as “XKZ” also takes part. Following the whims of the dice, the players travel back and forth between the states, visiting beautiful places and sometimes spending time in prison, all while striving to reach the finish first and claim the coveted inheritance. Everything ultimately turns out in a completely unexpected way, including the identity of the winner.
