This Czech-language horror novel is set in Kruguer, a small Patagonian village at the “end of the world,” surrounded by enchanting mountain scenery. On June 27, 1987, an inexplicable wave of mass madness overtakes the village, leaving only a handful of survivors from its hundred inhabitants. Freshly fallen snow turns red with blood, the village burns to the ground, and severed heads, entrails and human remains lie scattered across the landscape. Commissioner Dut arrives from a neighboring town to investigate, questioning witnesses and participants who insist that everyone was killing, and anyone who did not kill was killed. Told through multiple narrators and interspersed with excerpts from the popular soap opera Nezkrotná and the essay Civilization or Barbarism, the novel follows Dut as he confronts the most baffling case of his career and investigates what becomes of the depopulated village, transformed into a cursed “place of shadows.”
