Daphne has always loved the way her fiancé Peter told the story of how they met. How they met, fell in love, and moved to Peter's hometown to start their life together. Peter told the story like he was cracking a whip... that is, until he realized that he actually loves his childhood best friend Petra.

And so Daphne begins a new story: stuck in the beautiful Michigan town of Waning Bay, without friends or family, but with a dream job as a librarian, albeit a poorly paid one. Daphne ends up as a roommate of the only person who can truly understand the awkwardness of her situation: Petra's ex-boyfriend, Miles Nowak.

Scruffy, disorganized Miles, who sometimes revels in solitude and has a penchant for heart-wrenching ballads, is the exact opposite of practical and somewhat uptight Daphne. They avoid each other until one day, after getting drunk, they form a shaky friendship and come up with a crazy plan to post a few misleading photos on social media. So what? Who can blame them?

But it's all just for show, because there's no way Daphne can truly start a new chapter in her life by falling in love with her ex-boyfriend...
