Beschreibung
The Misanthrope is a five-act comedy written in verse. It is one of Molière's best plays – and one of the greatest comedies – that highlights the absurdities of social and literary pretense and focuses on a person who rushes to criticize the faults of others while remaining blind to his own. This play satirizes the hypocrisy of French aristocratic society, but it also adopts a more serious tone by pointing out the shortcomings that all people possess. The play differs from other farces of the time by depicting dynamic characters, as opposed to the traditionally 'flat' characters that most satirists use to critique societal issues. It also stands out from most of Molière's works by focusing more on character development and subtle nuances than on plot progression. Although this play did not achieve commercial success in its time, it survives as Molière's most famous work to this day.
