A magical story from an ordinary urban neighborhood. "I didn't give you the name Ronja so you could grow up in Toyen; children shouldn't live where the starry sky isn't visible," says Ronja's dad. Yet it is in the Oslo neighborhood of Toyen that Ronja, her dad, and her older sister Melissa live. Christmas is approaching. Dad is an alcoholic, mostly hanging out with his buddies at the Star Gate pub, and due to his constant drinking, he can't even manage a simple job selling Christmas trees. Melissa has to step in for him, just like in many other things. Ronja wants to help at least, so she offers customers branches and wreaths. The whole of December revolves around wet gloves, commissions, and beer, and how (un)cheerful this year's Christmas will be for both sisters. And even though the situation doesn't look rosy, fortunately, there are still three wise men, a star, and a forest to retreat to when things get really tough.
