Jesse Thistle, abandoned by both parents at a toddler age, briefly finds himself in foster care with his two brothers, cut off from everything he ever knew. All three children later end up with their father's parents, whose loving but strict upbringing soon sparks the first conflicts. The entire house and the memories of all family members are relentlessly haunted by the spirit of Jesse's drug-addicted father. In an attempt to cope with his past, Jesse falls into a self-destructive cycle of drug and alcohol addiction and petty crimes, resulting in him spending more than ten years on the streets with short breaks. Only then does he realize that if he doesn't start living differently, he will die.

In his poignantly human, heart-wrenching memoir, Thistle candidly and fearlessly shares his troubled past, writing about the hardships he faced and how he learned the truth about his parents.
