But come on, it's night, she wanted to say, but her tongue was so heavy that it remained just a thought. Knock-knock-knock, it sounded tirelessly from the other side of the wall. It had been more than ten years since they last used these signals. After both got mobile phones, knocking was replaced by more sophisticated arrangements, yet the simple knocking on the wall remained firmly rooted in Markéta. Even in her sleep, she could distinguish a quick triple knock, which meant – are you there? – from a slow triple knock, which in turn meant – shall we go out?
