Captain of coastal navigation Master Pierre Servan Malo Antifer, who at the age of forty-six lives in retirement in Saint-Malo, has one big problem. He owns a document from his father, Thomas Antifer, with the geographical latitude (24 degrees and 37 minutes) of some island where a vast treasure is supposedly hidden. Under the document is the signature of Kalmyk Pasha, who bequeathed his treasure to Master Antifer's father because he saved him during the mass execution of prisoners ordered by Napoleon Bonaparte after the conquest of Jaffa in 1799. Master Antifer has been waiting impatiently for years for someone to tell him the necessary longitude needed to find the island. Neither his family nor his friend Gildas Tregomain believes that Master Antifer will ever learn the longitude. Then, a notary named Ben Omar from Alexandria visits him and tries to extract the latitude of the island with the treasure from him. When he fails, he must come clean.
