Beschreibung
The father of fifteen-year-old Lily Knight has succumbed to alcohol and pathological jealousy. During one of their heated arguments, Lily's mother, Hazel, accidentally kills him. Although the court acquits her given the circumstances, she remains a murderer in the eyes of the community. Therefore, she welcomes the news that she has inherited a country house in the middle of the woods with joy. After a challenging renovation, Hazel and Lily move in with hopes for a new life.
However, the house has a terrifying history. More than three hundred years ago, it was inhabited by Mary Long, who was accused of witchcraft by a group of villagers and was burned at the stake near an old rowan tree. That tree still stands nearby and is surrounded by numerous superstitions.
Lily gets to know the surroundings and the quirky inhabitants of the village. Among them are both members of the local coven of modern, seemingly harmless witches and descendants of those who drove Mary to the stake.
Was Mary really a witch? Or was it just about her land? And how do Hazel and Lily fit into her story?
