On a bloody night in 1929, the murders of the Hope family shook the coast of the American state of Maine. Cut to 1983, when caregiver Kit McDeere arrives at the crumbling villa overlooking the ocean. She is to take care of Lenora after her previous caregiver fled in the middle of the night. Seventy-year-old Lenora is confined to a wheelchair, has become mute after a series of strokes, and communicates with Kit only by typing sentences on a typewriter. Kit begins to help Lenora write about the events that led to the tragedy in the Hope family. She soon discovers that the story is more complicated than anyone thinks. When details about her predecessor's departure come to light, Kit begins to suspect that Lenora may not be telling the whole truth – and that the seemingly harmless woman she is caring for may be much more dangerous than originally thought.
