Getting burned in the sun hurts, but getting burned in love hurts even more. The main character of this novel, Éléonore, a quirky Frenchwoman living in Italy, knows this all too well. Currently working as a cleaner, she tries to sweep not only dust from her clients' homes but also gloom from her own heart with her broom and sharp humor. She is nearly forty, a mother of sixteen-year-old twins, and has just ended a year-long relationship with a married man whom she still desperately loves. How to get rid of the pain from a breakup, and how long can this suffering last? During the five weeks we have the opportunity to peek into her life, she discovers that although each week may seem the same as the last, the opposite is true. Her clients are also experiencing their dramas, and Éléonore, who enters their homes and lives like a gray eminence, seems to be able to help them in many ways. Each seemingly ordinary day thus has the chance to reveal what life gives and takes away, and perhaps even find some remedy for her broken heart.
