Sloane Parker works as a librarian and lives an ordinary, content life in an ordinary, peaceful town. She would never say that she is lonely... Yet every day she looks forward to the moment when the old grump Arthur McLachlan wanders between the shelves of books and treats her to some juicy insult. Their mutual bickering is the highlight of Sloane's day, so when Arthur doesn't show up one day, the librarian worries about him and sets out to find him. In an effort to cheer up the sick old man, she gets a spontaneous idea to start a private book club, and thus a group of mismatched individuals who don't fit in anywhere else is born. The Lonely Hearts Book Club becomes a place where they unexpectedly find joy and friendship. It turns out that each of their hearts has been captured by a book, in whose pages they can get lost – and where they can ultimately be found as well.
