Dinosaurs are not just extinct creatures that were interesting for their size and bizarre shapes. They represented a group of extremely successful vertebrates that completely dominated the terrestrial ecosystems of our planet for an unimaginably long time—almost 150 million years, throughout the entire Mesozoic era of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. They were also incredibly diverse, ranging from tiny feathered forms to armored 'walking fortresses' and the most fearsome predators of all time, to the mightiest long-necked giants that ever stomped across the land. And perhaps most importantly, dinosaurs never actually went extinct.
