Be careful what you wish for... Lucy Hart knows better than anyone what it's like to grow up without loving parents. In her childhood, she was lonely and neglected, finding solace in books, especially in the Hour Island series by Jack Masterson. Now at twenty-six, she works as a teacher's assistant and shares her love of books with her students, including six-year-old orphan Christopher, who lives with foster parents. Lucy would do anything to adopt him, but it seems that unless she has enough money, no one will entrust her with the boy. Just when Lucy is about to give up, Jack Masterson unexpectedly announces that he has written another book after years, and he also announces a contest to be held at his home on Hour Island. Lucy becomes one of four contestants who can win the only manuscript of this book, hand it over to a publisher, and thus gain a substantial sum of money. For Lucy, winning would mean everything – she could finally adopt Christopher. However, the competition is not easy, as there are not only other cunning contestants but also ruthless book collectors, and she is distracted by the too-handsome illustrator of Jack's books. And Jack "Mastermind" Masterson himself is plotting traps that will forever change the lives of them all.
