Young student Pavel sets out for a pleasant evening walk, reflecting on adulthood and planning to smoke a cigarette on a park bench. A sad girl with a suitcase is sitting there, but she is unwilling or unable to talk. Irritated, Pavel decides to ignore her and light another cigarette. As he strikes the match, he suddenly notices a yellow star bearing the word JUDE on her coat. It is the time of the Protectorate: transports of Jews to Terezín have begun, and an assassination attempt has taken place in Prague against Heydrich. This novel tells an enduring story of tragic love during one of the darkest periods in Czech history.
