Brian, Coco, and Ollie can't stop fearing the ghost of the smiling man, and they also can't stop searching through ghost stories for explanations of what happened to them in the fall, and clues on how to escape the maze. After a long winter spent mostly together, huddled in the safest places they could find, they eagerly seize the opportunity in spring to go on a trip with Ollie and Coco's parents and Captain Dimmonds on the excursion boat Cassandra to the local Champlain Lake, where, according to legend, the creature Champík resides. However, Champík is not as friendly a fellow as his name might suggest. And the boat is far from a safe place. In another of their adventures, Brian's old friend Phil joins them, but Brian hasn't had much time for him lately. They find themselves once again in a world beyond the fog, once again fighting for their lives, and this time one of them might not make it out.
