The Ice Sphinx is another adventurous science fiction novel from the series Remarkable Journeys. The book is written as a sequel to the novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by American poet Edgar Allan Poe, who was one of Verne's favorite authors. The novel is narrated by American traveler Joerlink, who boards the ship Halbrane, captained by Len Guy, in August 1839 on the Kerguelen Islands. On the way to the Falklands, he discovers that Captain Guy is convinced that Poe's novel is based on true events and that the ship is on an expedition to Antarctica to rescue the remaining crew of the whaling ship Jane, on which Arthur Gordon Pym sailed, and whose captain, William Guy, is the brother of Captain Len. Joerlink eventually joins the rescue expedition.
